Computers & Their Functions

This page lists the computers owned by the School with an indication of their intended uses.

login.cse.unsw.edu.au is the recommended host to connect to. It currently points to wagner and weill, but will be updated with any new servers that are added, or if one server is down for a while.

Simulation Servers

The server williams can be used for simulations and long running or resource-intensive programs. See Which servers should I use? for more information on the different uses of these servers.

Home Directories:

Home directories are stored on a number of different linux servers which are mounted over NFS when you log in to a CSE linux machine or via samba if you are using a self administered computer.

X Servers are used by programs such as XMing (from Windows boxen) and Xvnc (on unix, linux, etc). They allow remote access to X-based programs (graphical UI) such as tkrestore and tkbook.
