New IP Policy for the University

July 6, 2010

Dear colleagues

As you may be aware, the University has for some time  been reviewing its Intellectual Property (IP) Policy.  The Vice-Chancellor has approved a new policy, with associated Guidelines and Procedures. The policy was endorsed by the UNSW Council on 21 June 2010 and took effect on 1 July 2010.

The new policy clarifies and tightens many of the definitions relating to IP and is supported by a set of detailed guidelines and procedures.  The revised policy is more consistent with other GO8 University IP policies, creating a level playing field in terms of IP ownership and commercialization. There is now a more succinct statement on the ownership of student IP, a new procedure for disclosing and exploiting IP and clear mechanisms to acknowledge and deal with pre- existing IP. New guidelines have been developed for copyright ownership and for the disbursement of net revenue from IP commercialisation.

I urge all members of staff  to be aware of the provisions of the new policy and the associated guidelines and procedures.

Details of the new Policy and related documents can be found at the links below.
